Legacy, by James Kerr is a must read for any executive!
The All Blacks have arguably one of the best performance records of any discipline in the world and a win rate that all leaders can envy! A masterclass in transformational leadership, this book outlines all the key elements that are vital to build a successful organisational culture.
At the heart of it all, repeated throughout, was that “better people make better All Blacks.” A message that resonates deeply with my core beliefs and the values I implore within Caritas.
The ethos is one of shared responsibility. To each other and to the organisation. One where no individual is more important than any other. Where all treat each other with kindness and respect. There is a higher purpose. A collective goal and a shared inner strength.
A culture where leaders create other leaders, so that the mindset permeates the organisation. This is something I have been fortunate to experience within my own career and hope that I can inspire my successors in the way my predecessors inspired me.
There are so many lessons in this book that it is impossible to digest in one sitting and I know this is one of those titles that I will continue to refer back to as my organisation evolves.
It finishes with “the first XV” – the fifteen rules that the All Blacks live by. I don’t think we’ll be starting our team meetings with Hakas any time soon but I wonder just how many other ideas we might be able to take on board going forward….
